diy pallet stocking hanger

December 14, 2016 by lorrin sell 2 Comments

Seedling holiday banners - stocking stuffers
I have been trying to figure out where on earth to put our stockings since we moved into this house nearly 5 years ago.  We don’t have a fireplace, and since it is split-level, we don’t even really have a staircase to hang them on.

The first year we were here, I hung a branch on the wall, and attached them to that.  I had an idea in my head, but it just didn’t work out.  I ended up taking it down.  Last year, the stockings ended up randomly hanging from a wreath that is up year round in our living room.  It was a lame attempt at hanging them.  This year, I was determined to find a way to hang them that fit my style, and looked good, and I did it!  It was so easy, I’m almost embarrassed to share the tutorial.  I really love it though, and I have plans to make it work as more than just a stocking hanger.

DIY pallet stocking hanger

this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.

(You can have these directions delivered right to your inbox!)

Materials

  • Wood stain
  • Sealing wax
  • 3M command picture hanging strips
  • 3/4″ finishing nails
  • one board from a pallet
  • sanding blockscripture-prints
  1. Use the sanding block to quickly sand the edges and top of the board.  I knew I wanted a rustic look, so I didn’t want to bust out the sander.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.
  2. Paint on the stain, and let it sit for a minute, and then wipe off excess. I used a very loved can of weathered oak.  I love how it has a gray tint to it, and gives a driftwood kind of feel.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.
  3. Seal the wood with the sealing wax, following the directions on the container.  I bought this can when I refinished our dining room table, and there is still some left.  It’s totally been worth every penny.  Plus, I really do love how it gives a finishing touch to the wood, without adding shininess.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.
  4. I used oil based sharpies to paint six nails gold.  I thought it would be a cute touch.  It really wasn’t necessary in the end.  You can’t even tell that I did.  But I guess if you used bigger nails you would be able to tell.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.
  5. We have 6 people in out family, so I evenly spaced out 6 nails, and hammered them in until there was about 1/4″ or so left out.  I have plans for this hanger once the stockings are put away (stay tuned).  I definitely could have done something fancier with knobs, but I knew I didn’t want anything more than the nails.  Once it’s hung on the wall with the stockings, you can’t even see the nails, which is exactly what I was going for.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.
  6. Attach the command strips to the back of the plank and then the wall.  You guys, it doesn’t get any easier than this.  I didn’t have to mess with hardware on the back on the pallet or anything.  This made the whole project so easy, and quick!  I used these strips a few weeks ago to make a DIY Christmas photo booth.  So quick and easy!!  I love these things!  They are literally all over my house.this diy stocking hanger was so easy to make, and i am so happy with how it turned out. it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a mantle or a staircase.

Do you hang your stockings on a mantle, or stairwell, or somewhere else altogether??
