It snowed this weekend here. Everyone, and their brother was outside playing in the snow with their kids. Even, I sucked it up and took the kids outside. I have to admit, it may have been cold, but it was beautiful, and the kids were in heaven!! If you’re headed out to play in the snow with your kids, make sure you take your camera. You will definitely want to capture those moments. Time flies, as we all know. These are the moments we want to hold on to. Here are some great tips for how to take pictures of kids in the snow.

use manual mode. this is one of those times where using your camera in auto mode is not going to benefit you. it’s more than likely that if you use auto mode for pictures in the snow, you may end up with properly exposed snow, but your subjects most likely will be underexposed.
Slightly overexpose your images. Just slightly. This will brighten up your snow.
Try to shoot for an overcast day. If you’re hoping to get pictures of your kids playing in the snow, try to plan for a day that’s overcast. First of all, it helps lessen the dynamic range so it won’t be nearly as difficult to nail proper exposure. Also, it’s blinding when the sun is out, and all of that white stuff is around. you’re likely to get a lot of squinty eyes if you shoot when the sun is out!
Keep your shutter speed up as high as possible so you can freeze (haha!!) those snowflakes as they’re falling!!
Add texture and contrast to the scene with the use of hats, scarves, brightly colored jackets, etc. The snow is beautiful, and so clean when it first falls. It acts as an amazing reflector, and, naturally, draws you into the subject of your photo. adding texture or color to the image just makes it that much more interesting.
Take at least a few wide shots to show the story!! Close ups are fun, but showing the full story is fun too! Backing up can show how much snow you got, or where they are playing.
