whitewashed burlap table runner

October 21, 2016 by lorrin sell 2 Comments

Hey, everyone!! WELCOME!!

Every now and then, I get an urge to decorate our little home.   My kids make a sport out of spilling red juice on anything, and everything in our house that cannot be washed.  Everything we own is either an updated piece of used furniture, a hand-me-down, super cheap, or has the ability to be thrown in the washer or wiped down.  I have tried several times to add a runner to our dining room table, or placemats.  Every time I do, the kids destroy them.  I could try harder to force the kids to only have drinks in the dining room, but there’s not a chance in hell I could convince the big kids to drink out of a cup with a lid- even if they spill their drinks just as much as the littles.  Although, I will say, the spills are a little less frequent with tervis cups with lids (which even the big kids can use.  Heck, I even use a lid every now and then!)..

Anyhow, I have been dying to add something to the table since I refinished it a while ago.  I love using burlap, but I kind of wanted just a little more to it than straight burlap.  In the past, I have used burlap as a table runner, and it works great because it adds some extra texture to the table, it’s cheap, and it’s neutral.  Those times, I just purchased a few yards of burlap, and cut it myself.  This time, I purchased a burlap table runner.  Seriously, this couldn’t have made things easier.  It was still super cheap, and it took me 20 minutes, and that included stopping twice to wipe wild thing #4’s butt- so clearly, it wasn’t difficult.

Materials

  • sponge
  • flat paintbrush
  • burlap table runner
  • white acrylic paintscripture-prints

    Directions

  1.  Mix paint and a splash of water in a cup to thin it out a little bit.  I shouldn’t be super thin though.  Maybe like watered down yogurt.
  2. Work in sections focusing on the edges.  I wasn’t going for perfection.  I painted some spots thicker than others.  Once my brush was basically dried out, I continue to paint around that area until there was nothing left on the brush.I love this simple burlap table runner. 3. Use a wet sponge to wipe off the area you just painted.  This will blend the paint, and make the white more “washed” and less harsh.I love this simple burlap table runner. It is so easy to make.
  4. Check on your kids or wipe butts…
  5. Repeat steps two and three until you’re done.I love this simple burlap table runner. It is so easy to make.
  6. Let it dry, and you’re done!I love how it turned out, it’s just a subtle difference from the original runner, but added some texture to the table.I love this simple burlap table runner.
