tips for going to the beach with kids

March 21, 2024 by lorrin sell Leave a Comment

Despite the fact that our family has to travel to get to the beach, it is one place we always try to get to every year, and it is one of our favorite places to be!  We’ve managed to figure out some things to make our time spent at the beach even more fun- for all of us!  These tips for going to the beach with kids are sure to make things easier, and enjoyable for your family.

Don’t forget to pin this for later!

Tips for Going to the Beach with Kids

*for your convenience, there may be affiliate links throughout this post, so you can easily find the things i am showing you.  by using these links, your pricing stays the same, but i earn a small commission.  you can see my full disclosure here

1. Over pack sunscreen.

Pack what you think you will need, and then pack some more.  The worst thing that can happen is not having enough sunscreen while you’re at the beach.  Sunscreen should be reapplied liberally every couple of hours, and if you’re spending time in the water, perhaps more often.

2. If you have a toddler, pack a small inflatable pool.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much easier this makes things with a toddler.  You might even get to sit for a few minutes.

3. Choose a spot close to the lifeguard.

For safety reasons, we always try to choose a spot close to the lifeguard.  Of course the lifeguard should be able to watch all of her designated area, but sitting closer just gives me peace of mind.

4. Use a beach wagon like this one!

Trust me when I say you want something that lets you drag your supplies to your spot, especially if you’ve got a long walk.  You can use this cart to carry beach chairs, towels, sand tours, cooler, pretty much anything.  Gone are the days of grabbing your towel, and hitting the beach.

5. Pack LOTS of snacks, and a couple of extra bottles of water to rinse sandy hands off.

My kids are always hungry, and they become ravenous at the beach.  Especially if there is no food around.  Do your self a favor, and always pack loads of snacks even if you think it will be a short beach trip.

6. Use mesh bags to hold your sandy toys.

This is one of my favorite tips for going to the beach with kids.  You can find mesh bags at dollar store.  You could even get colored ones like these to divide them up for individual children.

7.  Pack extra towels.

Keep extra towels in the car for cleanup after your time at the beach.

8. Bring your own umbrella for shade.

You could pay to rent one, but not all beaches offer them.  We have this sportbrella and we love it.  It’s super easy to transport, and gives us a nice shady spot when we need one, and a place to keep our cooler out of the sun!

9.  Bring an extra bag for garbage.

I always forget this, and end up with a pile of garbage, which inevitably blows all over the place.

10.  Take lots of pictures!

I mean… I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t mention pictures, would I??
