netflix and amazon prime shows for adults

June 16, 2024 by lorrin sell 10 Comments

By the end of most days (ok, everyday), I’m ready for the kids to go to bed, and some grown-up time.  I don’t watch grown up tv during the day.  There just isn’t time, and even if there were, most of the time anything that’s on tv that isn’t meant for kids isn’t really appropriate for the little ones. It’s really no secret that I like my tv.  My true love is true crime and documentaries, but I’ll save those for another post for my fellow crime junkies!

10+ shows for adults to stream

*for your convenience, there may be affiliate links throughout this post, so you can easily find the things i am showing you.  by using these links, your pricing stays the same, but I earn a small commission.  you can see my full disclosure here

My kids are older now, but when they were younger, and I was working from home, bed time also equaled work time.  Being able to stream shows was my go-to for unwinding while I worked.  Thank goodness for my Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and all of the other 10ish streaming providers to which we subscribe.  If you don’t have a smart tv, grab yourself a   fire stick.  We have ditched cable and satellite altogether.  We stream everything these days.

Before I continue, I want to note the feature image, not all of these are shows I would watch with small children around.  Some are definitely not G-rated, and some aren’t even PG.  You’ve been warned!

1. Queen Charlotte– A Netflix series.  If you loved the Bridgerton series, you will love this one!  It follows the Queen Charlotte and her betrothal to King George.  Not for kids!

2. Maid– A Netflix series.  A young mother leaves an abusive relationship and makes her own way cleaning houses. It’s super sad and triggering because of the beginning, but it ends up being really inspirational.  Just because of the sensitive nature of partner abuse, I would just make sure you think about whether yours is mature enough to watch it.

3. One Mississippi- An Amazon Prime Original.  Sad circumstances surround the main character when she needs a double mastectomy, and then her mother suddenly passes away.  It’s sort of a dry humor.  You will fall in love with the characters.

4. Never Have I Ever– A Netflix series. I binged this so fast.  It’s about a teenage girl trying to become popular in high school.  It’s funny and light for the most part.  I would watch this with my older kids.

5. Griselda– A Netflix series. First of all, Sofia Vergera is the main character.  She is so talented and this role is so far from her part on Modern Family. This one is definitely not for kids.  There is a lot of violence, drugs, and sex.  It is based on the life of Griselda Blanco and how she builds a cartel in Miami.

6. Parks and Recreation– Find it on Peacock.  An oldie, but goodie.  It’s hilarious, and Amy Poehler is in it.  Watch it!  I watched it with my 10 year old.  It originally aired on television so it’s safe.

7. Friday Night Lights– Find it on Netflix.  This was the first show I EVER binge watched, and I would watch it again in a heartbeat.  When the show was actually on the air, My husband tried so hard to get me to watch it, and I shut him down because I had no interest in watching a show that was about a high school football team.  He  insisted I would love it–  it’s the only time in our marriage he’s been right.  I was devastated when it was over and I wouldn’t be spending anymore time with the characters.

8. Little Fires Everywhere  A Hulu series.  Based on the book, it’s about a mother and daughter pair.  They rent a house from Reese Witherspoon’s character.  The daughter tries to figure out her life without following her mother’s every “command.”  There are some secrets and some plot twists.  The show was good, but the book was even better!  You could watch this with older kids.

9. Bridgerton– A Netflix series.  Also based on a book.  So good!  There are 3 seasons, plus Queen Charlotte which is a spin off, so lots to watch.  It’s a historical romance series about the social season when young unmarried persons basically look for a partner.  Warning!!  This is not something I would watch around my kids!

10. School Spirits– Find it on Paramount +.  This one is a teen drama/ mystery about a girl whose spirit is stuck at the school.  She is trying to figure out what happened to her.  I loved this one. I would watch it with my older kids.

11. Abbott Elementary.  Find it on Hulu. About an inner city school and the teachers who work there.  It’s hilariously accurate.  Shows how much the teachers love their students, but also the hardships, in a very funny way.  Definitely would watch (and have) with my kids.

12. Hanna– On Amazon Prime Video. I actually watched this years ago with my then 10 year old. We really enjoyed it.  It’s a coming-of-age drama about a girl who is raised in the woods and doesn’t really know who she is or from where she came.  It’s suspenseful and different.

13. The Summer I Turned Pretty– Find it on Amazon Prime Video.  This is another teenage romance drama with 2 seasons. It is also based on a book.  It’s about a girl who spends summers at the beach with her mother and brother and her mother’s best friend and her 2 sons.  It ends up being a love triangle between the girl and the brothers. It’s safe to watch with your kids.

14. A Teacher– Find it on Hulu.  About a teacher who engages in an inappropriate relationship with her teenage student and the effects it has on both of their lives.  It’s not as graphic as some of the others, but I wouldn’t watch it with my 10 year old.

15. Pulse– Find it Netflix. Kinda like Grey’s and ER together and set in Miami’s Dade County.

16. White Lotus– Find it on Amazon. Dark and weird humor. DO NOT watch this with kids anywhere near. Super bizarre about a resort, and honestly, I can’t even explain more than that because it’s so weird. haha!

There you have it, the next time you’re looking for something to watch, try one of these!!  There are so many more but, hopefully, there are one or two in that list that you haven’t seen yet.  Don’t blame me though if you’re not going to bed until 2 in the morning because you have to watch just one more!

Do you have a show you love on Netflix or Amazon Prime that I didn’t mention?  Leave me a comment!

And, if you haven’t already, make sure you sign up for your free trial of Amazon Prime and take advantage of 30 days of free streaming!!

Good list! I’ve been binge watching The Office on Netflix. It’s all new to me since I never watched when it was on. Will probably do Parks and Rec next.

I went through a love/hate relationship with Orange is The New Black. I thought it was amazing at first and then it kind of got old, but I needed to see what happened because everyone was talking about it.
I need to start watching Bones. I’ve heard really good things about it and it helps that David Boreanaz is so gorgeous!
