This year though, I promised myself Easter/ spring decorations. I’m kind of obsessed with all things Pottery Barn, and their spring decorations are no obsession. So, I just flip through the pages of their spring catalog and basically circle the things I love the same way my kids do the Toys R Us catalog at Christmastime.
I’ve got a pretty good grasp on which of their Easter decorations I just can’t live without. Number one on the list was large moss covered eggs. But I knew I could make this on my own, and it seemed disgustingly easy.

The I started looking and found that I was too cheap to even pay for styrofoam eggs I had planned to use as a base. I mean, they’re not terribly expensive, but I really just didn’t want to spend that much on the eggs.
So, I kept checking Amazon hoping I would find a deal, but nope. Then one day, I thought, I could do this without the styrofoam base, and I did it!! And, I’m not kidding, I felt like I hit the lottery, because I am a dork, and this project cost me a couple of dollars!!
DIY moss covered eggs
Materials
- plastic grocery bag
- scrap paper
- tape
- tacky glue (this is my favorite grown-up glue)
- spanish moss (I bought mine at the dollar tree)
- sheet moss
Directions
- Depending on how large you want your egg to be, crumple up enough scrap paper to fill the plastic bag to the right size. You’re going to want to keep packing down the crumpled balls of paper.
- Once your bag is filled enough, squeeze the air out of the bag, and twist the open end, and cut off the excess bag. You are going to shape the bag, and paper pieces into an egg shape as much as possible.
- Wrap tape around the bag to form the shape of the egg. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, you’re going to fill it in with moss, and you can still reshape it a little once the tape is wrapped around it. You do want to try to get it to at least resemble an egg.
- Start gluing sections of spanish moss onto the egg, filling in crevices a little more to even the surface out.
- Once your egg is covered in spanish moss, use your hands to flatten the moss a bit, and once again shape the egg. Fill in extra spots and random areas with the sheet moss to add some green to the egg.
- That’s it!! How simple was that?? Have I mentioned how much I adore a project that can be done quickly? I’m just way too impatient to handle anything that takes too long! I decided to add a jute bow to my eggs.
