School is back in session for most of you. Can I get an “AMEN!”?? I wasn’t as ready for school to start when it was scheduled to start, but a new school building, required a push back in the start of school. I’m beyond ready now, and so are my kids! But, school starting also means I am back to making school lunches which might be the MOST boring job EVER! I’m talking 180 days of making the same thing over, and over again for 3 kids. People, that’s 540 lunches. By the end of the year, I want to cry as I add the same boring sandwich, the same boring juice box, and the same boring snack to my kids’ lunch boxes. I haaatteeee making lunches, and I neeeeed to figure out how to make school lunch fun (for me and my kids)! That’s all going to change this year though. I’m headed into the school year with a new outlook on lunch. And, the best part is, it’s not any harder than before, it’s just so much less boring. Because, you guys… I’m dreaming of a life where making lunches doesn’t suck the life out of me. Who’s with me??!!
5 ways to make school lunch
fun
1. Use a bento box.
Bento boxes are all the rage lately. I can’t prove it, but my guess is it has something to do with everyone hating to make lunches as much as I do. I’m all over this box. The possibilities are endless!
2. Add color.
Add a little color to your lunch by throwing in some fruit, or veggies. I’m not the least bit ashamed to admit it makes me feel happier looking at bright colors!
3. Ditch the sandwich.
I won’t lie, I love a good sandwich, but I have seriously considered throwing a loaf a bread, a pound of deli meat, and a tub of mayo across the kitchen by day 10.
I mean… another 170 days of sandwiches?!! No more sandwiches (at least not everyday). We made a list of things the kids would eat that aren’t sandwiches. All super easy options!
Here are a couple of them:
- yogurt and granola
- nachos and cheese
- build your own pizza
- cheese, crackers, and pepperoni
- cereal and fruit
4. Swap the juice box for a Sparkling Ice.
And while you’re at it, drink one yourself. They’re delicious, and it’ll make the lunch making process more fun! In the last few weeks since I have discovered these, my whole family has become obsessed with them.
Luckily, with 15 different flavor choices, and the option to buy them on amazon (hello… less time spent shopping with my kids in public..) they’ll never get boring!
5. Surprise them with a funny note, or joke.
I spent last year scrounging to add a note to a special kindergartner’s lunch. I was always looking for paper, or a pen. Honestly, adding a note was the last thing on my mind, but he let me know when I forgot (every. time.).
This year, I am ready! I’ve got a special note pad that now lives in the kitchen cabinet just for lunch box notes.
