capturing your everyday | remembering the places

earlier this week, our community was shocked and disappointed to hear that the local ice rink would be closing its doors on july 31st.  while this might not seem like a big deal to many, to us, we are losing a second home.  i mean, sure, it’s not perfect.  there are things that most definitely could be done to better the rink (Lord knows we have been to enough rinks to know ours isn’t the nicest or the prettiest), but all 4 of my children have spent an absurd amount of time in that rink.  the two youngest were weeks old when they started becoming familiar with our second home.  my kids have eaten breakfast lunch and dinner there, learned what a gumball was, learned to skate, had tantrums, made friends, and taken naps at the rink.  my youngest wild thing actually took her first steps at that ice rink.  there’s a good chance i will cry when the doors close.  it may not be the end of the world, and obviously, there are plenty of worse things that could happen, but it’s sad nonetheless.

which made me think…  we can’t be the only ones who have had this kind of thing happen.  how many times do we assume the restaurant we frequent will be there forever, or the school our children attend will be there forever, or the playground we visit every week will be there forever?!  (fyi, as i type this out, i’m realizing that every one of these things has happened to our family over the years.)

so, in the spirit of capturing your memories, i want to encourage you to take pictures that showcase the environment of the special places you love.  don’t forget the places.  take your cameras with you even when you don’t think you’ll need them, or whip those camera phones out.

3 tips for capturing your everyday | remembering the places

1.  often times when i am taking pictures indoors with lots of clutter or possibly people in the background, i will fill the frame with my subject.  in this case though, pull back, and take a wider image so that you can always remember what it looked like.
   
2. most of us would never think twice about having their cameras with them when they are on vacation, but hardly ever bring it with them when they are headed some seemingly ordinary location.  on the plus side, most of us have camera phones now. so, at the risk of seeming obvious, bring your camera with you, or take out that camera phone!!!
   3.  capture the moments that really do happen all the time.  it may seem like you’ll get another chance to capture it, or you’ll always remember it, but you just never know when you won’t be able to any more.  that’s the beauty of photography, freezing a moment that otherwise could be gone forever.

when the doors close on july 31st, to the place we lovingly call “our second home,” at least i will know, we will forever have these memories.  i will always be grateful for them.  what about your family, do they have a place they loved that was suddenly gone?  do you have pictures?  i’d love it if you would leave a comment!!
